Kafe Utu: Mouthwatering African food amidst a cool and cosy setting

As the goat curry was memorably spectacular the last time I dined at Kafe Utu, I was a bit disappointed and annoyed that my date for the evening – my husband and father of our two children – did not order that. (Shout out here to anyone who prefers that their partners do the ordering at restaurants. Gotta leave it to the experts right?)

Instead he opted for a fish curry and the goat stew. Surprisingly the goat stew was just as excellent as the goat curry. It was sweet and comforting, and perfectly accompanied by the rice topped with coconut shavings. The fish curry tasted like assam which provided a welcome tangy contrast to the thicker and sweeter stew. We also had padron peppers which tasted identical to the ones you get at a Spanish restaurant, and buffalo-like chicken wings which were good but sauce was just a tad too spicy for my liking.

The meal came up to a $130 for 2 pax even by though the portions were on the smaller side and I didn’t even have any alcohol. So this wasn’t exactly a cheap date place but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, the meal and the ambience, and will likely be back sometime soon in the foreseeable future.

Happy weekend everybody!
