Hospital food: actually… gasp, appetising?

I know, I know. What has become of this blog that I’m actually writing about hospital meals?! (It was just about bearable reading it… and now…)

Unfortunately, in a very nasty turn of events last week, I fell severely ill and had to be rushed to A&E, admitted to intensive care right away and then moved to a general ward in hospital, where I stayed for 5 days straight. The story itself though is for another day, another post, and another blog altogether.

What I am here to talk about is how surprisingly decent hospital food can actually be in Singapore.

There are however a couple of caveats to this.

One, the above photos are of meals ordered, and consumed, in private hospitals in Singapore. These tend to cost quite a bit more than the government hospitals, so I suppose you’d generally expect a higher standard of food service. But I didn’t expect them to knock the ball out of the park in this way…

Two, most of the food still tastes comparatively more bland than their outside of-hospital equivalents. For instance, the steak and chicken fettuccine had very little if not no salt at all, save for what was in the gravy. There was no sugar in the cornflakes either, though they’d probably give you some if you asked and weren’t under doctor’s orders not to have any.

Three, as there is very little to do in a ward (in my case I was also confined by the IV drip), these meals sort of become a highlight to your day. It’s very much like being on a long haul flight, minus the wide variety of entertainment. That said, as I had expected my appetite to be diminished due to my illness, it came as a surprise that I was able to gobble down and clean off each and every meal. Simply extraordinary.

And here are more hospital meals from when I gave birth to my son:

Lobster thermidor, French onion soup, cheesecake. Enough said!
Slow cooked short rib, curry pumpkin soup, chocolate fondant
